On Sunday afternoon, January 25, nine Matinee Friends returned to one of our favorite small theaters, the Spotlight Youth Theater in Glendale, to see “Chicago.” Everyone probably remembers the story of killers Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, vying for the spotlight and the headlines during the Roaring Twenties.
The production was exceptional. This Kander and Ebb musical, famous for its Bob Fosse choreography and unforgettable score, was performed by these talented teenagers with top honors. While every actor was excellent, the leads were particularly impressive; the young lady playing Roxie Hart was especially convincing in her role. While every song was memorable, I especially enjoyed the “Cellblock Tango” performed by the six “Merry Murderesses.” We had a hard time remembering that these performers were all teenagers!
For this performance, the theater replaced the front row of stadium seating with small cocktail tables and chairs. We thoroughly enjoyed this close-up experience and had a wonderfully entertaining afternoon.
