Six Matinee Friends enjoyed the scenic drive to Fountain Hills Theater on Sunday, May 3,to see the play “The Mystery of the Blue Train”, adapted from the Agatha Christie novel by Peter J. Hill. This was performed in their intimate Ross Collins Hill Playhouse by a large cast of 14 quite talented actors. The staging was very minimal, with only 14 chairs arranged along the back of the stage, where all the characters were seated. Each stood as they were needed. We had never seen this before, but it worked, with dialogue indicating where and when the action was occurring. In the play, Hercule Poirot faced his most challenging case! A mysterious woman, theft of a legendary cursed jewel, the murder of an unhappy wife and a night train from London to the French Riviera—ingredients for the perfect romance or the perfect crime? As with all Christie stories, there were several suspects and multiple clues, and we were surprised by at least part of the solution. The costumes were perfect for the time and person. The actors were all very good and provided an afternoon puzzle for us.
