“Good Girls Revolt: The History of Women in Journalism”
Kristin Gilger is Emerita Professor at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, where she served in leadership roles, including interim dean, over a 16-year period. At Cronkite, she also served as director of the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism and led the National Center on Disability and Journalism. Prior to joining the Cronkite School, Gilger had a 20-year career in newspapers. She was deputy managing editor for news at The Arizona Republic in Phoenix; managing editor of the Statesman-Journal newspaper in Salem, Oregon; and suburban editor at The Times-Picayune newspaper in New Orleans. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from the University of Nebraska. She is the co-author of the book “There’s No Crying in Newsrooms: What Women Have Learned About What it Takes to Lead,” published in 2021. Her second book, “My Son, The Priest: A Mother’s Crisis of Faith,” was released in November by Monkfish Book Publishing Co.
Lauren Gilger hosts “The Show,” the morning news program on KJZZ, the NPR affiliate in Phoenix. Prior to joining KJZZ more than a decade ago, she was an investigative producer and reporter for ABC15 News in Phoenix. She is the recipient of the George Foster Peabody Award and an Edward R. Murrow Award for a report that forced one of the world’s largest automakers to recall more than 700,000 SUVs because of safety issues. She also has reported on the systemic separation of immigrant families in the detention system, put pressure on the FDA to review a controversial form of birth control that has injured women world-wide, and exposed a backlog of untested rape kits in the Phoenix area. Gilger’s work also has appeared in The Washington Post and the Phoenix New Times and on ABC’s Nightline. She earned her master’s degree in journalism from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at ASU and her undergraduate degree in French and visual arts from Fordham University, where she also earned a certificate in American Catholic studies.
