Five Matinee Friends took a short drive to the Paradise Valley Community College Performing Arts Center on Sunday afternoon, April 6. Their purpose was to see the production of “Lady Windemere’s Fan” by Oscar Wilde. Though we found the first act to be somewhat slow, the action picked up in the rest of the play.
This was a play quite typical of the time, with mistaken identity, willful misdirection, romantic suspicions, and scandalous secrets. This first play by Wilde satires Victorian high society. The set was appropriately grandiose, as befits the wealthy upper crust, and the gowns were just lovely. And that fan of Lady Windemere’s–fluffy white feathers causing all kinds of trouble; all the ladies had impressive fans. The main characters had so many lines, all delivered in posh English accents.
We enjoyed our afternoon in London society!
