It was a beautiful fall day for an outing on October 10, when seven Matinee Friends took a short trip up to the PVCC theater to see “Drop Dead”. It was a couple of hours of silliness, as a cast of players tried to survive a rehearsal and performance of their show, despite falling lights, the murder of an actor and then the producer (who kept trying to insert his own very inappropriate “improvements” into the script), a very deaf elderly actress, and an English butler who tries very unsuccessfully to be French. All the time the manic stage manager rushes from side to side to back sweeping up broken props, repairing doorknobs, throwing fake snow, pushing the deaf actress onto the stage, and gagging the very unhappy and pushy playwright.
We enjoyed watching the nephew of Kathy S, our newsletter editor, trying to sit on a chair merely painted onto the backdrop (the producer gave only $35 for the set and props!) He did a fine job with one of the male lead roles. In fact, all the cast were very good at pretending to be bad actors, emoting all over the stage. Can the thespians save the show and their careers, solve the mystery, and somehow survive until the curtain falls?
