Four Matinee Friends spent a very enjoyable afternoon at the Black Theatre Troupe on Sunday, Sept. 17. The play was “Steal Away” and featured six amazing actresses. They portrayed their characters by facial expressions, movement, voice and spoken lines. They were such real characters we felt we were right there in their living room. The play was a drama/comedy which took place during the Depression in Chicago. Five upstanding church ladies raise funds to send young Black women to college by holding bake
sales, etc. But their latest graduate, Tracyada, has bigger ideas—they should rob a bank since the local bank turns down their request for a loan because “colored girls” have no need for an education! What ensues is the most hilarious heist that amazingly succeeds, since the John Dillinger gang is blamed!
