Five Matinee Friends returned to one of their favorite venues to see the wonderful teens of the Spotlight Youth Theater perform the musical “Tuck Everlasting”. Though the play is based on a children’s classic book, it has some serious ideas to think about. Would you want to live forever?
Young Winnie in the play thinks it would be great and why can’t she drink the magic water now (at age 11?) However, the Tuck family who did not know the magical properties of the spring in the woods before they drank from it over 100 years ago, has a different perspective. The story takes place in 1893, and the costumes reflect this time beautifully. The set is primarily done with a few pieces that wheel in and out to show the different locations clearly and efficiently. The most prominent and permanent part of the set is a very large and surprisingly realistic tree with the spring (of real water) flowing out from it. The actors were excellent as usual and the large ensemble filled the stage as they performed many different characters. When they were all dancing on stage at the same time, we were relieved that the choreography was precise and there were no collisions. There was also a croaking frog that had an important role.
We all enjoyed the afternoon very much.
