The intimate Don Bluth Theatre was the location for an afternoon of laughter for 11 Matinee Friends. “John Loves Mary” was the play that provided our entertainment on Saturday, Feb. 10. It’s the story of John Lawrence, a soldier returning from WWII, eager to see his sweetheart, Mary Mckinley. He needs to tell her he loves her, that he has missed her, and that he’s married! He married his buddy Fred’s British girl Lily so she could come to America, but it all goes wrong. The situation keeps getting worse as one good intention after another keeps making things worse. The plot kept us guessing through a delightful twist after a hilarious turn until someone finally told the truth! The actors were all terrific, with spot-on comic timing and just the right reactions to each situation. We were very glad we made the trip out to Scottsdale for this airy, witty, nostalgic romp.
