Four Matinee Friends attended the Spotlight Youth Theater production of “The Lightning Thief” on Sunday afternoon, May 22. After a seating mix-up, we settled into our seats at the top row, to watch the story of Percy Jackson, demi-god son of Poseidon, and his friends’ journey to the underworld to retrieve the lightning sword and save the world. Based on the popular middle grade book series, this musical followed the plot rather closely. The staging made excellent use of a video backdrop that provided a very effective change of scene. The young actors were quite good, especially Percy and his best friend, the satyr (half goat) Gordon. Unfortunately, we were seated next to three nice young ladies who were related to the actors and were quick to scream and jump to their feet in support of their siblings on stage. The show was well-done, though not quite the sophisticated play topic we have often seen by this impressive theater company.
