On April 7th the Museum and Special Events group went on a tour of the Phoenix Theater.
It is located in the heart of the Central Arts District and close to downtown on a 14-acre campus. It has three theaters, a restaurant, a bar, rehearsal halls, administrative offices, along with costume, scenic props, lighting, and paint shops, all in one place. What an amazing experience we had! The Phoenix Theater was originally founded in 1920. In 1924, the Heard Family offered the theater their old coach house on Central and McDowell. In 1952, Board President Shadegg, along with the Heard Family and Barry Goldwater, fought and won funding for a new building. Over the years there have been many renovations to address the shortage of space. They are again under construction working on a delayed project that will add another theater with a technically sophisticated 500-seat Broadway-sized theater, and exceptional in-house production facilities, top of the line ADA accessibility and a new sophisticated sound system.
After our tour, we went lunch at the Alexis Grille. It was a wonderful day. Everyone enjoyed the Phoenix Theater tour and the amazing lunch.
