LARGE GRANTS AWARDED
Thanks to the fundraising efforts by MVWC members, the Service Project Board was able to award a total of $ 10,000 to five local organizations this year. These large grants were given to organizations that were sponsored by a MVWC member. We are delighted to share the following Large Grant details:
$2,000 – About Care, Inc. – A program for independent, low-income, and homebound seniors, many who are food insecure. With these funds they would purchase $50 gift cards to popular grocery stores to distribute to clients in need. Their goal is to reach 40 clients over the next year. Their volunteers would take clients to the grocery store or shop for the client and drop off groceries.
$ 500 – Ballet Folklorico Quetzalli-AZ – for purchasing traditional costumes for the Yucatecan dances, sourced directly from artisans. The student recipients will receive instruction in traditional Mexican dance. Their program is inclusive and welcoming to anyone interested in learning folkloric dance.
$2,500 – GenTech Foundation – to provide high-quality STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education to students in low-income schools in Maricopa County. This project will support the implementation of hands-on, real-world tech programs in underserved schools, ensuring that students who might not otherwise have access to these resources can learn essential skills to be successful in the future workforce. STEM education is often unavailable in their schools. Moon Mountain, Shaw Butte and Sunnyslope Elementary Schools are all Title 1 schools and would qualify for this opportunity.
$2,500 – Homeless ID Project – for helping to empower individuals and families to end their homeless- ness and rebuild their lives by helping them obtain their U.S. birth certificate and an Arizona picture I D. AZ I.D. costs $12. The cost of an Arizona birth certificate is $20. The cost of a birth certificate from the other 49 states varies from zero to nearly $100.
$2,500 – The Undie Chest – Everyone Deserves Underwear (E.D.U.) This program addresses the challenges of students, especially those who are facing homelessness and the lack of essential re- sources due to foreseen or unforeseen circumstances in their households. The E.D.U. program aims to collaborate with school administrators and nurses to supply underwear. This will help boost students’ self-esteem and confidence, allowing them to focus on building their futures rather than worrying about their wardrobe.
